Online reflection 3

I have read the book The Hunger Games, this story is about 24 young people from twelve different districts that will be selected to participate in the Hunger Games, which is the biggest TV-show they have in the city. To get selected you have to be between 12 and 18 years old and two people from each district are being chosen by a lottery and then sent to the capital city.

The selected participants will then participate in live interviews, showcase their skills and be trained to survive a fight. A big reason of the interviews and live-television is to attract votes from the viewers so they could like them.  After that the participants will be sent to a playground in the woods where they have to war against each other. There are 24 participants but only one will survive.

When I read the book there was one part that I got fixed by, it was when Katniss Everdeen who is sixteen years old choose to sacrifice herself to the war for her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. She is only twelve years old and becomes chosen to the hunger game but her sister loves her so much that she voluntarily reports, and knew that this could lead to her death.

I got such an incredibly strong feeling when I read this and felt a huge happiness, of course you should sacrifice yourself for your family because they are your flesh and blood. Family is the most important thing we have and some we need to stand up for. But if we look at the society of today, we have chosen to live an extremely individual and selfish life. I think there are very few who make small sacrifices for their loved ones and rather helps them when they really need it. How many choose to call their parents every day or ask their old grandparents if they need something from the market so they don’t have to go out when the winter is coming and it’s slippery outside?

There is also an big debate about all the beggars we have in Sweden, that they are here because of some criminal gangs and that all of the money that they gets goes to the leader of the group. No matter what these poor have to sit in the cold all day long. I have been against to give them money but I think they would appreciate a bun or hot dog that makes their stomach a little fuller. This scene in the book really made me think of humanity, I'm very familiar as a person but myself and many others should really be more fellows human in the society. If it goes past an old lady or gentleman across the street you should help them and not only pass in your everyday life. I think that more people should at least try to perform three good deeds every week for a period to see if this is appreciated by the surroundings and how they like a person will feel. I think people will feel much better.
